The evocative feminine faces that Uekawa portrays are ringed with a series of objects, sometimes obscuring the still meticulously rendered expressions beneath. Uekawa’s shrouded faces add an extra layer of mystery and seduction, which, combined with her obsessive attention to detail, renders each painting a self-contained world of its own. Aya Uekawa was born in Tokyo and currently lives in New York. Her paintings have been exhibited at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Nassau County Museum of Art, the FLAG Art Foundation, New York, as well as a solo exhibiton at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati. Her work has been featured in Juxtapoz, Nippon Vogue, Flash Art, W, and The New York Times. This will be her fourth solo exhibition at Kravets Wehby Gallery.
