Foley Gallery is very pleased to present Hold On, an exhibition showcasing new paintings by Amy Casey. Hold On will be Casey’s second exhibition with the gallery and will be shown in conjunction with Everywhere All at Once, a show of mixed media works by Vanessa Marsh. Viewers are invited once more into absurd, invented neighborhoods. These precariously balanced cityscapes seem to, at times, fold on to themselves, and in other instances need the help of ropes or the roots of trees to keep them from tumbling out of place. Will they down or up if they are allowed any slack? The artist collects photographic references on walks through her surrounding neighborhoods and while on the bus in her home city of Cleveland, later reimagining the city and rendering it in acrylic paints. Of her work Casey says: “Though my townsfolk have gone through some difficult and perilous times, I am now trying to focus on growth (which I realize is also frequently difficult). I am trying to put down some roots in a landless landscape and move forward…I am curious about the resilience of life and our ability to keep going in the face of ever shifting circumstances. Amy Casey received her BFA in painting form the Cleveland Institute of Art in 1999. She has exhibited her work regionally and nationally with solo shows in Cleveland, Chicago, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Her work as been published in The New York times, New American Paintings, Juxtapoz, Hi Fructose, and Elephant and Harper's Magazine. Casey has been awarded two Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Awards, the Cleveland Arts Prize as an emerging artist and a grant though CPAC’s Creative Workforce Fellowship program. Amy Casey currently works and resides in Cleveland, Ohio.
